Women’s Hockey – Where is it Going?

Cheryl MacDonald is a sport sociologist. She has studied gender, sexuality, and ice hockey for nearly 15 years and has been an advocate who has appeared on CBC’s The Fifth Estate and has been a media spokesperson on inclusion for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League.

Ève LeBlanc is an Honours Psychology student currently working as Dr. MacDonald’s research assistant. She is a graduate of the Okanagan Hockey Academy and an Academic All-Canadian on the women’s hockey team at Saint Mary’s University.

Cheryl and Ève grew up playing hockey in two different eras that saw their own respective challenges and successes. The two will share their own pathways in hockey and comment on the state of the women’s game such as available pathways to compete, key roadblocks to equality and success, and the current structural landscape of the women’s professional game.
